More battles and skirmishes in the War of Independence took place in New Jersey than any other state. Trenton, Princeton, Springfield, and Monmouth were all key battlegrounds, and Morristown served as the Continental Army's winter encampment. Gen. George Washington's hasty retreat from Fort Lee through New Jersey and across the Delaware River in November of 1776 saved the Continental Army from almost certain defeat. And most consider Washington's decision to cross the Delaware on Christmas night and sneak up on a garrison of Hessian soldiers to be one of the turning points in the war.
